ABSTRACT
Workers in the paper industry worldwide are exposed to hazardous working conditions resulting from a harmful workplace environment that can cause accidents and occupational disease. The objective of this research was to assess the safety, hygiene, ecology, and emergency and health services for workers at a paper company located in Mexico State that manufactures sanitary napkins and adult diapers, and to use the findings to make recommendations for improving workplace health at the company. Across-sectional, descriptive, observational study was conducted. The PROVERIFICA model was used, which enable the construction of main work process, manufacturing production. The principal workplace demands that entailed risk were ergonomic factors, lack of control over the pace of work, and monotonous, repetitive tasks. Among the hazards observed were noise, exposure to dust, and accidents due to inadequate working are a conditions, equipment, and tools. Overall percent efficiency (PE), the main indicator in the methodology used, was 59.9 %, which means that the company's level of efficiency can be classified as “very poor.” It was concluded that the company has deficiencies in its occupational health systems and programs, due mainly to lack of participation at the management level. This could be improved by establishing occupational health plans and policies, implementing methodology for the detection and control of hazards, and implementing preventive programs to reduce occupational accidents and diseases.
