ABSTRACT
Paragangliomas of the carotid body are infrequent tumors, usually benign, asymptomatic and of slow growth. The diagnosis was suggested by ultrasound, computed tomography and fine needle aspiration biopsy, this one, nevertheless having been conclusive in the indication of the carotid angiography, is not advisable for patients in whom the diagnosis is suspected through the non invasive methods mentioned before. Likewise, surgical exploration for biopsy of the neck mass, without preoperative studies of radiology and image, is contraindicated. At the present time, digital subtraction carotid angiography represents the election procedure in the diagnosis of the paragangliomas of the carotid body due to its high sensitiveness, specification and definition of anatomical details with great neatness, and because its easy interpretation exceeds non invasive studies (ultrasound, doppler color, computed tomography and magnetic resonance imaging). The election treatment is tumor resection of which, in our case, belonged to type I of Shamblin and involves tumor extirpation with preservation of the carotids. Radiotherapy is indicated in unresectable tumors and in malignant injuries. The evolution of this case has been satisfactory and under observation during one year hitherto.
