ABSTRACT
Background: Irritable bowel syndrome is considered to be a functional disorder. It consists of chronic and recurrent gastrointestinal symptoms, without infectious, structural or metabolic changes. Objective: To determine the frequency of syndromes, as well as to corroborate reliable data among its clinical, pathological and psychiatric disorders.
Patients and methods: Forty-eight patients were selected by the gastroenterology service, according to Manning and Rome II opinions. All patients underwent total colonoscopy. During this study the proctologist decided whether to take the colon biopsy or not. All patients were remitted to the department of psychiatry. The whole processes took place in the internal medicine service.
Results: From the 48 patients, 38 were women and 10 men. Forty endoscopies confirmed the diagnosis, three were normal and five showed diverticular disease. From endoscopic studies, 6.25% were normal, 10.4% had diverticular disease, and only 83.3% corresponded to the diagnosis. From psychiatric studies, six were normal (12.5%), six showed depression (12.5%), and two presented schizophrenia (4.1%).
Conclusions: Patients with irritable bowel syndrome’s symptoms should be under observation in order to avoid erroneous diagnosis and treatments.
