ABSTRACT
Rationale: Excessive body weight is
characterized for the accumulation of energy as
fat in amounts higher than those expected from
subject´s sex, age and height. Excessive body
weight brings about adverse effects upon health,
and is associated with an increased presence of
chronic morbid events, and an over-expression
of vascular risk factors.
Objective: To identify
morbid processes ocuring in the patient with
excessive body weigth assisted at the Clinical
Nutrition Ambulatory Office of Institute of
Neurology and Neurosurgery of Havana (Cuba).
Study design: Descriptive, cross-sectional.
Study serie: Eighty-three patients (Males:
38.6%; Ages ≥ 60 years: 22.9%) with exccesive
body weight (BMI: 34.7 ± 5.9 Kg.m
-2) transfered
from the specialized Neurology Office for assessment of vascular risk.
Material and method: Presence of Diabetes mellitus (DM),
hipertensión arterial (HTA), dislipidemias, and
cardio- as well as cerebro-vascular diseases
were established by means of an oriented
interrogatory; non-alcoholic liver disease
(NALD) after ultrasonography; and
hyperglucemia (HG), hyperuricemia (HU),
hypercholesterolemia (HC), and
hipertrigliceridemia (HT) after analytical
measurements.
Results: Morbid procceses
distributed as follows (in descending order):
HTA: 54.2%; Cerebrovascular disease: 33.7%;
Cardiovascular disease: 13.3%; DM: 18.1%;
Dislipidemias: 10.8%; respectively. NALD
affected 39.8% of the examined subjects.
Frequencies of biochemical disorders were as
follows (also in descending order): HC: 37.3%;
HT: 36.1%; HG: 26.5%; and HU: 15.6%;
respectively. Frequency of Metabolic Syndrome
(MS) was 13.3%.
Conclusions: HTA is highly
prevalent in subjects with exccesive body weight
assisted ambulatorily due to cerebrovascular
diseases. In addition, these subjects distinguish
for NALD and dislipidemias. MS might affect
one in every 10 of these subjects.
