ABSTRACT
Background: Heart failure is a heterogeneous syndrome of difficult diagnosis, with increasing incidence and prevalence and whose epidemiology is little known in Mexico City.
Material and method: In order to know the prevalence of the heart failure risk factors in Mexico City, 10,000 questionnaires that included sociodemographic data, personal history, habits, comorbidities related to heart failure, signs and symptoms were filled out by individuals older than 18 years. The selection was made through a sample that was systematic and classified by age in 200 health centers (50 individuals per center) of Mexico City. The risk of heart failure was determined through a logistic regression equation.
Results: 9,564 (95.6%) questionnaires were recovered. Women constituted 75% of the sample. Among the heart failure risk factors with higher prevalence we found: obesity, high blood pressure, and type 2 diabetes mellitus. Regarding the gender, the following differences stood out: alcohol consumption (3.3 vs 23%, p 0.0001), smoking (9.4 vs 26.6%, p 0.0001), drug consumption (0.4 vs 0.9%, p = 0.02), hypertension (37.5 vs 30.7%, p 0.0001), previous myocardial infarction (1.9 vs 3.6%, p 0.0001), and obesity (57.4 vs 45.3%, p 0.0001) for women and men, respectively.
Conclusion: As heart failure is a serious problem, prevention is very important, mainly in the factors that can be modified, as the change of habits.
