ABSTRACT
Thyroglobulin testing (Tg) in washing biopsy fine needle, has been incorporated as a new tool in the differential diagnosis of metastatic cervical lymph nodes, however, its use in the diagnosis of thyroid nodule has not been sufficiently investigated.
Objective: To determine the usefulness of the thyroglobulin testing in samples obtained from washing the biopsy fine needle in the diagnosis of thyroid nodules.
Material and methods: Tg is determined with an immunoradiometric method on 40 samples obtained from washing the biopsy needle of patients diagnosed with thyroid nodule who attended the consultation of the National Institute of Endocrinology. The Mann-Whitney test was used to compare quantitative variables. Sensitivity and specificity was evaluated.
Results: Of the 40 cases analyzed, six belong to males (15%) and 34 female (85%). Statistically significant differences (p ‹ 0.001) were found in the concentration of Tg from the group diagnosed with malignant lesions (11.5 ng/mL) and the group of benign lesions (360 ng/mL). A sensitivity of 84.6% and a specificity of 37.0% was obtained.
Conclusions: The determination of thyroglobulin in flushing biopsy needle may be another tool to consider in the differential diagnosis of thyroid nodule.
