ABSTRACT
Cancer is a group of diseases which represents a significant public health problem in Mexico and worldwide. In Mexico
neoplasms are the second leading cause of death. An increased morbidity and mortality are expected in the next decades.
Several preventable risk factors for cancer development have been identified, the most relevant including tobacco use, which
accounts for 30% of the cancer cases; and obesity, associated to another 30%. These factors, in turn, are related to sedentarism,
alcohol abuse and imbalanced diets. Some agents are well knokn to cause cancer such as ionizing radiation, viruses such
as the papilloma virus (HPV) and hepatitis virus (B and C), and more recently environmental pollution exposure and red meat
consumption have been pointed out as carcinogens by the International Agency for Research in Cancer (IARC). The scientific
evidence currently available is insufficient to consider milk either as a risk factor or protective factor against different types
of cancer.
