ABSTRACT
In Cuba, medical care to pregnant sickle cell disease women has experienced a
considerable increase in the number of items included, among which are
preconceptional evaluation to get the proper classification of the severity of her
clinical hematological situation before pregnancy; care of gestational period and
measures during childbirth and postpartum period. This attention has undergone
significant changes over the last 30 years, since the radical change in the institutional
acceptance of pregnancy in this kind of patient and the respect for her autonomy, to
the establishment of a policy to reduce risks and hematological or obstetric
complications during this period. All these measures are today the prophylactic and
therapeutic strategy that has been followed with these patients and it is our aim to
present it as a document to be consulted to take proper decisions in the care of these
patients. The possibility to have a specific strategy for the care of pregnant women
with sickle cell disease who will be attended by a multidisciplinary well qualified
medical team, allows us to establish specific therapeutic policies in the whole country
and significantly increase health indicators as well as the quality of care to this group
of patients.
