ABSTRACT
Accumulation of fluid in the
peritoneal cavity is defined as
ascites. The leading cause of
ascites worldwide is cirrhosis,
with other common causes
such as malignancy and heart
failure. Successful treatment
is dependent on establishing
the underlying cause of ascites.
The aim of this review is to
facilitate a diagnostic algorithm
for health care providers in
Costa Rica and further extend
management on patients
presenting ascites.
