ABSTRACT
Background. Congenital heart defects (CHD) have a high incidence
throughout the world. In Mexico about 12 to 16 million
newborns present cardiac defects each year representing the second
cause of death in children under 5 years of age. In our country,
the most of CHD are managed at public hospitals, and only a few
of these are considered medical surgical specialized centers.
Objective. To describe the epidemiology of a group of patients
in whom CHD was resolved in a private hospital and analyze the
factors involved in the outcome.
Material and methods. A
retrospective study was carried out including patients after surgery
for CHD, admitted to the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit of the
Medica Sur Hospital, from January 2013 to December 2015. We
described pre-surgical, surgical and post-surgical variables.
Results.
The study included 19 patients with 20 surgical procedures,
16 patients were 5 years old or less. The most frequent surgeries
were ventricular septal defect (VSD) repair, total repair of tetralogy
of Fallot and atrial switch operation with VSD repair. According
to the surgical risk, 45% of the procedures were categorized at
level 3 and 4. Some kind of complication was present in 9 children
and the mortality rate was 0%.
Discussion. Although our center
has a reduced number of patients compared with public hospitals
which are considered medical-surgical specialized centers; our
outcomes are similar and even better regarding survival.
Conclusion.
A private hospital may become a pediatric cardiovascular
medical surgical center.
