ABSTRACT
Introduction. Premature or preterm birth is defined as every newborn delivered before 37 gestational weeks. It has an important impact in morbidity and mortality in the whole plant and is a cause of impairment among survivors. Some of these involve disabilities related to hearing, visual and learning problems. The objective was to describe the performance, morbidity and mortality of newborns at a private institution in western Mexico.Material and Methods. This is a retrospective study from January 2000 to December 2015. We used medical records of newborns less than 37 gestational weeks from a private institution in western Mexico. The following factors were analyzed: gender, height, gestational age by Capurro, APGAR and Silverman Anderson scores, procedures associated to prematurity and mean of delivery. All variables were analyzed with descriptive statistics, using percentages, averages, standard deviation and media. Data process was done using excel.
Results. During the study period we registered 8,311 births, 1691 were premature. Out of these 847 (50.27%) were male and the rest females. The average weight and height was 2528 grams and 47cm respectively. APGAR scores were 8 and 9 at the first and 5 minutes. Silverman Anderson score had a media of 0. 50 deaths were reported, 32 of them with prematurity diagnosis exclusively, 16 with respiratory distress syndrome and 2 with sepsis. The death rate was 2.95.
Discussion. Attention to premature newborns must be of high quality and according to updated official guidelines. Results obtained by our study suggest that prenatal control among these women was adequate so that newborns would have reached the above standards. The attention process of mothers and neonates from this private institution is certified and it helps the newborns to reach good health indicators along with a correct maternal integration.
