ABSTRACT
Introduction: Diseases of the heart valves we serve today are not treated the same as 40 years ago when they began to implement the first prosthesis valvulares.Todos technological changes and the development of new surgical techniques, generate required changes in results of it, so we put pro-analyze the behavior of the etiology of valvular heart disease patients undergoing surgery at the Institute of Cardiology and Cardiovascular Surgery.
Methods: An observational study was conducted, descriptive, retrospective where all patients of any age, of both sexes scheduled for elective cardiac valvular surgery procederes in the period between January 1978 and May 2016 were included time.
Results: Predominated age groups between 45 to 59 years and 60 to 74 years and the male sex, normal LVEF and NYHA Class III. Between 1978-2006 rheumatic etiology predominated, while from 2010 to now mainly atherosclerotic degenerative etiology.
Discussion: The first cause of these diseases has changed rheumatic etiology to degenerative etiology. This has then happened the advent and widespread use of antibiotics to treat streptococcal infections, eradication of poverty, the development of new health technologies and increasing life expectancy, which also leads to patients arriving today our operating rooms are much older ages.
