Adenoid cystic carcinoma of the breast. Case report and literature review

ABSTRACT

Adenoid cystic carcinoma is a rare type of breast cancer which has more favorable prognosis than other forms of breast cancer. The correct histopathological diagnosis is essential and must be differentiated from cribriform intraductal type carcinoma, invasive ductal carcinoma with cribriform pattern and collagenous esferulosis. The optimal treatment of this malignancy has not been well established, however it is admitted that the mainstay of therapy is complete surgical resection of the tumor with an adequate margin of healthy breast tissue. We report a case of a 65 year-old whose initial manifestation of malignancy tumor was 2.5 cm. The study included mammography diagnosis that was suggestive of malignancy (BIRADS V). In percutaneous biopsy, adenoid cystic carcinoma was reported. It was classified as T2N0M0 stage IIa and subsequently underwent radical mastectomy. The biopsy of the surgical specimen corresponded to adenoid cystic carcinoma, histologic grade 2 and analysis of the axillary nodes was histologically negative. Followed for two years the patient is without evidence of disease.
