Marcadores tumorales en cáncer de mama: CA 15-3 y antígeno carcinoembrionario

RESUMEN
El cáncer de mama es la neoplasia más frecuente en mujeres, a través del tiempo se han desarrollado métodos para el seguimiento y el diagnóstico de la enfermedad como es el caso de los marcadores tumorales, los cuales se definen como las sustancias producidas por las células normales que aumentan su producción en presencia de células malignas. De manera general, los marcadores de tumores se usan en el
screening, diagnóstico y seguimiento de algunos tipos de cáncer, aunque una concentración elevada de un marcador puede sugerir la presencia de cáncer, este hecho por sí solo no es suficiente para el diagnóstico. Los marcadores utilizados para el cáncer de mama son el CA 15-3 y el antígeno carcinoembrionario. Los niveles séricos de CA 15-3 en pacientes sanas y en aquéllas con enfermedad temprana no muestran diferencias; sin embargo, se utiliza en pacientes con cáncer de mama avanzado o metastásico para valorar la respuesta a la quimioterapia o la progresión de la enfermedad.
