ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess postherpetic pain control with oxcarbazepine vs gabapentin.
Material and methods: Thirty patients over 60 years old, with postherpetic neurophaty and poor pain control, were randomized into two groups, 15 each. Group A received oxcarbazepine and Group B received gabapentin, both at 600 mg/day, as well as supplementary medication with tramadol drops, 1 mg/kg body weight, and amitriptyline, 25 mg/day. Analgesia was assessed using a visual
analogue scale (VAS), allodynia and hyperalgesia, as well as side effects at the treatment start and during the four following weeks.
Results: VAS: Group
A showed a gradual decrease, from 8 to 2.8 by the fourth week of treatment (p < 0.05).Group B showed a decrease from 8.5 to 1 by the fourth week (p < 0.05).
Mechanical allodynia and hyperalgesia had decreased by the end of the treatment (p < 0.05), showing statistically significant differences in both groups. Side effects were somnolence dizziness, headache, nausea and fatigue; the three latter showed no statistically significant differences among groups.
Conclusions: Both drugs showed a similar analgesic effectiveness
and a gradual decrease in allodynia and hyperalgesia, but oxcarbazepine showed a higher incidence of side effects.
