ABSTRACT
Introduction. The most common pathology of the appendix is
acute inflammation. Appendicular tumors have an incidence 0.4%
of all tumors of the digestive tract, and they represent a small group
within the pathology of organ and its importance lies in that they are
exceptionally diagnosed before or during surgery, and in cases where
it is suspected the intraoperative diagnosis may be questions
regarding the surgical treatment of choice.
Objective: To record
the incidence and histology of appendicular tumors as well as the
clinical characteristics of patients diagnosed with appendicular
tumors in Medica Sur.
Material and methods. A retrospective,
observational, descriptive study. Medical Sur Clinic and Foundation.
Archives of Pathology from 2003 to 2013 pertaining to spare
with surgical diagnosis of acute appendicitis were reviewed. Descriptive
and exploratory analysis was conducted to determine histology,
clinical presentation and correlate data.
Results. 3,430
patients with preoperative diagnosis of acute appendicitis were recorded.
Eight benign tumors and 34 malignant of 42 appendicular
tumors (1.22%) were diagnosed. Twenty-five patients were female
and 17 male, median ages was 42 ± 19 years. Age less than 35
years at diagnosis were associated with a neuroendocrine appendicular
tumor (p = 0.034).
Conclusions. The appendicular tumors
are rare clinical condition often symptoms that require imaging.
The most common clinical presentation was as acute appendicitis.
Sometimes are incidental findings in imaging tests performed
in the study of other diseases.
