ABSTRACT
The fast decrease of kidney’s excretory function with the subsequent accumulation of nitrogen metabolites is known as acute kidney injury (AKI). In the past few years, AKI has become of great importance because of the increased morbidity, mortality and progression to chronic kidney failure. The diagnosis of this entity might be complex due to the lack of homogeneity on the diagnostic criteria
and the risk factors that contribute to its development. AKI’s definition and classification according to RIFLE/AKIN criteria, based on the first manifestations and the terminal outcomes of the disease, have opened the perspective to incorporate AKI as a preventable and treatable entity from early stages. It’s important to highlight the predisposing factors, as well as the environmental insults that may contribute to the development of AKI. Standardization and use of unified criteria for the diagnosis of AKI are of great importance for the appropriate diagnosis and prevention of chronic consequences of the disease.
