ABSTRACT
Introduction: Cuban epidemic neuropathy emerged during the last decade of XX Century in a devastating way because of its magnitude and damage produced. Actually sporadic neuropathies cases of unknown etiology were presented.
Objectives: The objective of this paper is to describe and characterize light peripheral neuropathies that attend to the Cuban epidemic neuropathy services in two municipalities from Havana City.
Materials and methods: 48 patients from neuropathy consulting room of Guanabacoa and Regla municipalities were studied. a1-antitrypsin levels were evaluated and a clinical survey was filled.
Results: All the 39 patients suffering from peripheral neuropathy presented irritating vegetative symptoms. There is no motor dysfunction. 31.8% and 95.5% has achillean arreflexia and hyperreflexia respectively. There are no digestive and dermatological problems among the patients with peripheral neuropathy. The patients with psychical disorders and achillean arreflexia have significantly different levels of a1-antitrypsin in comparison with other patients without this type of neuropathy.
Conclusions: The studied population differs from other studied groups that belong to other parts of the country according to them were more frequent symptoms and signs. The role of a1-antitrypsin helps to understand the physiopathology of the disease.
