ABSTRACT
Objetive: To characterize the students with symptoms of asthma at the Latin American School of Medicine, in the academic year 2012-2013.
Method: A transverse descriptive study in the field of the medical care was carried out, in which the respiratory health survey recommended by the “European Community Respiratory Health Survey “was applied to 199 students, starting from a stratified sample.
Results: The students investigated came from 36 countries, prevailing those from the area of America (56%). Among these students there was a high exposition to the tobacco smoke, a predisposition significant factor for the development of asthma among the adolescents. When contacting with specific environmental factors in a considerable number of cases, above all, allergic rhinitis (16,3%), an allergic response was appreciated. Lack of breathing, cough and expectoration were among the most frequent clinical manifestations referred. The preliminary prevalence of asthma was 15%.
Conclusions: Risk factors related to asthma were found in the students from the Latin American School of Medicine surveyed. The clinical symptoms obtained through the respiratory health survey from the “European Community Respiratory Health Survey”, allow making the diagnosis of the disease in unknown asthmatic individuals. Prevalence according to the national and the international standards described is obtained.
