ABSTRACT
Introduction. Since the 1990s, the intradiscal ozone therapy has been used to relieve the pain caused by herniated discs. Despite its effectiveness, there is not always a correlation between clinical and radiological improvement. Perhaps the differences are due to the type of treated disc.
Methods. A controlled, randomized clinical trial was developed in 200 patients with radicular pain caused by lumbar disc herniation in the period 2009 to 2011. The sample was administered retro or intradiscal ozone therapy according to the group, with the aim of identifying clinical and radiological improvement, depending on the type of disc.
Results. The intradiscal and retrodiscal ozone therapy yielded better clinical outcomes in patients with healthy discs. The retrodiscal approach, however, was better with a significant difference (p = 0.0049) .The number of radiologically improved patients was higher in both groups of patients with healthy discs, with no significant differences between them (p = 0.9535).
Conclusions. The intradiscal and retrodiscal ozone therapy provides better clinical and radiological results in patients with healthy discs.
