ABSTRACT

Cardiac tamponade results from de accumulation of pericardial fluid under pressure, leading to impared cardiac filling and hemodynamic compromise. A key feature of cardiac tamponade is greatly enhanced ventricular interaction or interdependence. Heightened ventricular interdependence coupled with progressive systolic predominance of an inspiratory increase in systemic venous return are largely responsible for the diagnostic physical and imaging signs. Patients suspected of having cardiac tamponade should be evaluated with an electrocardiogram, chest radiograph, and echocardiography. Definitive treatment of cardiac tamponade is achieved by removal of the pericardial fluid. This review makes a concise approach of this life threatening disease.
