ABSTRACT
Introduction: In recent decades, peripheral nerve surgery has made significant progress due to the development and implementation of new surgical techniques that goes hand in hand with the evolution of microsurgery. The clinical results obtained in recent years are considerably higher than in the beginning, result of technological advances in imaging and multimodal neurophysiological monitoring techniques which currently complement diagnosis and intraoperative decision making.
Objectives: To review the existing multimodal neurophysiological monitoring techniques and to describe its usefulness in peripheral nerve surgery.
Material and methods: Review and analysis of medical literature in the last 20 years related with the subject in MEDILINE/PubMed, Cochrane and Ovid data bases.
Results: Optimization of the results can be achieved when considering the use of surgical reconstruction techniques and are individually tailored to the needs of each patient based on the findings of multimodal intraoperative monitoring.
Conclusions: It is a fact nowadays, the use of multimodal intraoperative monitoring allows the surgeon to optimize intraoperative decision making in peripheral nerve surgery, particularly in those surgical procedures indicated for the treatment of traumatic lesions and tumors, due to several factors.
