ABSTRACT
Introduction: Glycosylated hemoglobin correlates with micro- and macrovascular complications in patients in patients with diabetes. It is also associated as a predictor in the detection of coronary artery disease. However in non-diabetes patients its role has not been extensively evaluated.
Objective: To evaluate the relation of glycosylated hemoglobin in the appearance of coronary artery disease and his severity.
Method: An observational longitudinal study was conducted in non-diabetes patients that were undergoing coronary angiography in Hermanos Ameijeiras Hospital from September 2011 to 2012. Previous procedure glycosylated hemog-lobin was measured.
Results: 60 years, masculine gender (80%) and white skinned (68 %) were predominant (p=0,00). High blood pressure (65%) and smoking habit (41%) were the most frequent risk factors (p=0,00 y p= 0,05 respectively). Patients with multi vessel coronary disease had higher level of glycosylated hemoglobin (p=0,005). We obtained an area under the ROC curve of 0,78 and a cut point of 4,35 with a sensibility of 72% and a specificity of 82 % in the prediction of coronary artery disease.
Conclusion: HbA1c is useful in prediction of coronary artery disease and its severity.
