ABSTRACT
Background: The most common complaints related to sleep disorders which seek medical attention are insomnia, excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring and abnormal movements or conduct during sleep. The most frequent is insomnia, followed by excessive daytime sleepiness, snoring and sleep apnea. Evaluations performed in big populations coincide with this data; however, there is a lack of this kind of epidemiologic studies regarding sleep pathology in our country.
Methods: We analyzed a total of 317 Mexican patients who were evaluated with polysomnography in the Clinical Neurophysiology department and in the Sleep Disorders Clinic of the ABC Medical Center from January 2007 to February 2012. The variables measured were sleep efficiency, total time of wakefulness and sleep, sleep onset latency; light, slow waves and rapid eye movements sleep percentage; periodic limb movement index, number of arousals, presence of hypopneas and apnea, pulse oximetry and heart frequency rate.
Results: Two hundred three patients were male (68%) and 114 female (32%). The youngest patient was one month old and the oldest 93 years old (35.8 media). A total of 18 different sleep disorders was diagnosed.
Conclusions: There are differences between sleep pathology in our Mexican population with the ones reported in the medical literature for obstructive sleep apnea, insomnia and periodic limb movement related to frequency, gender and age.
