Prevalence of neurological diseases in a primary care center in the Suscal Canton of Ecuador

ABSTRACT
Introduction: Suscal is the youngest canton of
Ecuador, where 76.73% of the population identify
themselves as indigenous Kichwa-Kañari. There
are no neuroepidemiological data available on this
population.
Objective: To determine the prevalence of
the medical attentions for the most relevant
neurological conditions in Suscal between
September 2014 and August 2015.
Methods: Cross-sectional analysis of 12 months
of files generated by the program of automated
daily record consultations and outpatient care
(ADCOC) according to neurological diagnoses of
the international classification of diseases (ICD-10)
from all the attentions: cerebrovascular disease,
Parkinson disease and other parkinsonism, epilepsy,
neurocysticercosis, dementia and headaches. Data
was obtained from a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet
and then the prevalence was calculated.
Results: 13,276 consultations were held in
the local primary care center during the period.
64.7% were women. 65.8% identified themselves
as Kichwa-Kañari. As for neurological diagnoses,
we found: 15 cerebrovascular disease cases,
105 seizure syndromes, 10 Parkinson disease
cases, 7 neurocysticersosis, 5 dementias and 136
headaches.
Conclusions: A low prevalence of neurological
diseases in Suscal was observed. This is the first
global report of neurological diseases in a Kichwa-
Kañari population, and hence, a door is now open
for biomedical research in these populations,
extending to all the different Ecuadorian indigenous
cultures.
