ABSTRACT

Introduction and objectives: there are a few studies that evaluate habits and knowledge of health professionals about photoprotection. This study aims to characterize knowledge levels in a sample of medicine students and Mexican physicians.
Material and methods: a questionnaire was elaborated to evaluate knowledge and attitudes of photoprotection of medical students, physicians at social service, teachers (physicians) of the medicine school of Tecnológico de Monterrey, Campus Monterrey. The questionnaire was applied during November 2014 until February 2015. The results were analyzed with descriptive statistics and association test using the statistical package SPSS version 22.
Results: a total of 633 questionnaires were collected and analyzed. Most of the respondents report that they use solar protector (66.8%) but the principal reason is “when they go to the beach” (76.1%) and while “daily, during sunny and cloudy days” represent only the 26.4%. The knowledge scores obtained were similar among scholar and educative levels (p = 0.115).
Limitations and conclusions: the instruments need to be refined to obtained better information, especially those related with the culture of photoprotection. The results show the necessity to develop an academic culture of photoprotection and to increase the diffusion of photoprotection among the health professionals.
