Therapeutic adherence in adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus

ABSTRACT
Introduction: the non-adherence to the treatment of chronic diseases, such as type 1 diabetes mellitus constitutes a public health problem, which approach is essential from the Psychological point of view.Objective: to characterize the therapeutic adherence of adolescents with type 1 diabetes mellitus attending to Pepe Portilla Provincial Pediatric Hospital in Pinar del Río.
Method: an exploratory-descriptive study using the qualitative methodology and a case study design was performed. From a target group of 30 adolescents suffering from diabetes mellitus type 1, a sample of 15 individuals was chosen, since the definition of a series of inclusion and exclusion criteria. The techniques used in the research were: review of the medical records, complete the sentences, drawing (spontaneous and thematic), composition, interview and observation.
Results: partial adherence to treatment predominated in 80% of cases, while only 20% are fully adhered to the therapeutic schedule. Factors such as the existence of knowledge, confirmed self-efficacy, coping style focused on emotional regulation and the satisfaction with the health team, are observed in adolescents, regardless of their partial or total adherence to treatment.
Conclusions: motivation, stress, health beliefs, family and social support were the observed factors associated with the level of adherence in the subjects included in the study.
