ABSTRACT
Introduction: substance abuse has become a social problem. Adolescence is a critical stage in the consumption of addictive substances, therefore prevention efforts must be particularly directed to this group of the population, school being the ideal setting for your application.Objective: To characterize the substance use (snuff, alcohol, coffee) in students of the School of Nursing "Lidia Doce".
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional descriptive study was conducted on a sample of students of technical education at the School of Nursing Lidia Doce to which was applied an anonymous survey on the consumption of snuff, alcohol and coffee. Students enrolled in the study were characterized according to age, quantity and frequency of consumption of the substances.
Results: There were surveyed a total of 523 students representing 70.6% of total enrollment in technical education, with an average of 17 years of age, approximately 50% are smokers and most started before age 15 smoke between 6 and 10 cigarettes a day, 75% drink alcohol at least twice a month, 20% of respondents drink coffee and 82% of them take between 1 and 3 cups.
Conclusions: The age of onset of substance use is declining. Should strengthen measures to prevent substance abuse in educational centers.
