ABSTRACT
The development of new technologies and procedures tend to increase the video assisted thoracic surgery upon thoracotomy. It was shown the results attained from a group of hospitalized patients in the Special Care Ward from the Surgery National Center of Minimum Access.
Objective: Todescribe the behavior of hospitalized patients who have been operated onvideo assisted thorax surgery in the Special Care Ward.
Method: A descriptive, transverse and retrospective study was carried out. The population was made up by 25 hospitalizedpatients operated on video assisted thorax surgery in the Special Care Ward, fromFebruary 2011 to June 2013.
Results: The predominant ages were among female elder people, from 41 to 60. These people were diagnosed with Lung Cancer and the most frequent complications were Fever and Mechanical Ventilation for more than 72 hours. The study showed 84% of non-complicated cases, though one of the patients confronted great complications that prolong his permanence in the SCU, but he died.
Conclusion: This new technique allows less biological aggressiveness, less complications and speedy recovery. Even though, the study showed a very little percent (16%) of complicated patients, the personnel from the Special CareServices must be upgraded andwell-trained in the techniques and procedures that permit to assume appropriately these challenges.
