ABSTRACT
Introduction: The requirement for efficient management in health institutions makes the permanent reconsideration of the leading forms necessary to achieve higher level of communication, more decentralization in decision-making process, more flexibilization in the relationship with subordinates and better quality of health care systems. Objectives: To identify sex differences in perceptions on the leading skills of women and men in health management.
Methods: Descriptive and cross-sectional research conducted in 2014 which used a questionnaire to be answered by 56 managers from polyclinics, hospitals and municipal health management departments in Pinar del Rio, Camagüey and Santiago de Cuba provinces. Date were summarized in absolute frequencies and percentages.
Results: none of the studied sex-attributed leading skills could prove a statistically significant difference between men and women. It was more frequently found in women that they considered flexibility, organization, work planning, person-centered orientation, capacity for communication and negotiation and teamwork as more representative of their sex. Men strongly attributed innovation and strategic vision to their sex.
Conclusions: A group of leading skills in health management is identified on the basis of the perception of the female and male managers, but no sex-attributed differences could be shown.
