ABSTRACT
Background: Children in their early years of life are undergoing a body scan, this process includes the placement of objects that are available to them in natural orifices. Since the child is capable of gripping (at 8 months) he/she has a natural tendency to place objects by the natural orifices of the face. Objective: To demonstrate that in children 2-17 years of age with a diagnosis of foreign body presenting to Otolaringology with extraction attempt have more complications than those without previous management.
Material and Method: An observational, prospective, open, clinical, longitudinal cohort study, in which patients who attended the Pediatric otolaryngology service with the diagnosis of foreign body in the ear or nose were studied from March 1st, 2007 to March 1st, 2010. Continuous variables were compared with t test of Student, nominal variables with proof of Mann-Whitney U. Risk and complications of prior management and risk of complications with no previous management were established as well as the relative risk of these.
Results: We studied 300 patients, of which 109 belonged to the group with previous attempt extraction (Ctx) and 191 to the group without prior extraction attempt (Stx); 92% of patients with previous attempt extraction had complications as well as 8% of patients without previous attempt to extract.
Conclusions: Complications occurred more frequently in patients in the group with previous attempt extraction. Similarly, these can be prevented by a proper diagnosis and sending to the specialist to offer the most appropriate treatment for the patient.
