ABSTRACT
Hepatitis B virus is not cytopathic for hepatocytes. Clinical
manifestations can be explained by inflammatory host responses.
The severity of the liver and systemic disease is determined by the
immunological condition of the patient. Such manifestations can be
either hepatic or extrahepatic, such as optic neuropathy, Bell’s palsy,
Gillian-Barré syndrome or transverse myelitis.
