ABSTRACT
An analytical cross-sectional case-control study was conducted in the López Peña and Municipal polyclinics in Santiago de Cuba, from January to August 2012; our aim was to assess the knowledge and attitudes towards depression and genetic studies related to mental illnesses. The sample consisted of 100 individuals, including depressive syndrome diagnosed patients and their first-degree relatives, health professionals and medical students. Evaluated variables were related to depression experiences, knowledge and acceptance of the disease, and attitudes towards testing, genetic counseling, genetic research into psychiatric disorders and access to the results thereof. Data analysis was performed using Statistica package v7.0. Only the 47% of the sample showed a good perception of knowledge of the disease. There were not statistically significantly differences between the groups in the answers that measured attitudes towards predictive testing for psychiatric illnesses and genetic counseling, those that assessed attitudes towards genetic research and those related to the personal consequences of genetic research. In general the interviewees’ attitude with regard to psychiatric genetic testing and information disclosure accordingly to autonomy and privacy bioethical principles.
