High-altitude pulmonary edema: a pediatric emergency

ABSTRACT
High-altitude pulmonary edema is a frequent clinical condition of non-cardiogenic etiology caused by the presence of hypobaric hypoxia. It normally presents itself after patients who spent several days at sea level return to their place of residence with an altitude greater than 2,500 meters. The lack of adaptation generates an important hypoxia that can be confused with other entities. We present the case of a 7-year-old male patient admitted into the Emergency Room referred by his pediatrician for sinus tachycardia. The objective of this report is to inform about the diagnosis and therapeutic treatment of high-altitude pulmonary edema, due to the fact that this clinical condition is common in children because of their anatomical and physiological characteristics and is frequently underdiagnosed
