ABSTRACT
Background: Choledochal cysts are dilatations of the bile ducts that may be associated with intermittent biliary obstruction. Bile flow can cause chronic liver damage, fibrosis, and biliary cirrhosis with portal hypertension.
General objective: To identify the characteristics of patients with choledochal cyst.
Material and methods: A transversal, retrospective, descriptive study was conducted. Records with a diagnosis of choledochal cyst were collected and identified in the period from August 2006 to August 2012 to find the pathophysiological background and factors that are associated with complications.
Results: We identified 33 patients with a diagnosis of choledochal cyst in the period from August 2006 to August 2012; nine of them were removed for having an incomplete file. Of the 24 patients with complete records, 18 were women (75%) and six men (25%) being a 3:1 ratio. The most common clinical manifestation was jaundice, in 50% of the patients, followed by abdominal pain (20.8%).
Conclusion: Choledochal cyst in children is more common in females with jaundice and abdominal pain.
