ABSTRACT
Clinical laboratory has a fundamental role in patient diagnosis; 60-70% of the medical decision is based on the laboratory results, the pre-analytical phase is considered a simple step, but it is an important component in the laboratory operation process, this phase evaluates patient preparation, specimen collection and specimen handling.
Objective: To identify the frequency of errors during blood collection of outpatients.
Material and methods: This study is descriptive. We identify errors in the pre-analytical phase for a month; the data was collected in a validated check list.
Results: A total of 164 outpatients were observed; and 80.48, 81.09, 19.5 and 91.46% had the following errors: inadequate asepsis, long time of tourniquet, incorrect order of draw and inadequate blood mixing; respectively.
Conclusion: Phlebotomist should be trained according to standard guidelines to reduce pre-analytical mistakes.
