ABSTRACT
Introduction: the territorial stratification is considered an important methodology to spatially estimate the events through a process of aggregation and disaggregation of territories to assess, from selected variables; however, the approach to population stratification by living conditions becomes complex, facing several difficulties, the lack of instruments highlights as well as methods of construction of simple synthetic indicators to identify differential health behaviors as an expression of living conditions. Objective: Design the Living Conditions Index for the stratification of the country under this condition in Cuba, 2014.
Methods: The construction algorithm from Comprehensive Development Index was used for the design of Living Index. The assessment of the validity of this index was performed by opposition and predictive validation. The national territory was classified into three layers of living conditions from the provincial level with the Living Conditions Index designed.
Results: Partial Development Index showed that the economic and environmental dimensions obtained unfavorable results. Santiago de Cuba was province of the worst living conditions while Havana has better living conditions. 37.5% of the country's provinces ranked in the favorable level, while the fairly favorable and unfavorable stratum classified 33.5% of the provinces. The designed Living Condition Index (LCI) reached high sensitivity and specificity.
Conclusions: IDI in terms of living conditions is useful and easy to classify the provinces, showing adequate discriminative ability to classify territories according to their conditions of life, ranking the provinces of the eastern region in the stratum with unfavorable living conditions while most of the western provinces and some central ranked in the favorable level.
