ABSTRACT
Introduction. The diabetic foot corresponds to a multifactorial complication of diabetes mellitus, currently remains the leading cause of non-traumatic lower extremity amputations in Mexico. The Vacuum- assisted closure (VAC) is a new method that has been shown to improve the outcome in wound care, which has changed de actual clinical practice.Objective. Evidence the effectiveness of artisan VAC system, associated with topical ketanserin as treatment of diabetic foot in a 53 year old patient.
Case report. A male patient aged 53, with advanced diabetic foot, according to the classification of Wagner was classified as grade III, which was treated by artisan VAC with ketanserin as alternative treatment for this entity, for four consecutive days.
Results. Using this treatment, the patient presents favorable clinical evolution, healing the infectious process, promoting re-epithelialization of the tissue, also, decreasing day hospital stay.
Conclusions. The VAC system, combined with topical treatment with ketanserin, proved be very effective, representing an adequate therapeutic alternative in patientis with diabetic foot grade III of Wagener’s classification.
