ABSTRACT
Patient involvement in effective oral hygiene during and after periodontal therapy is essential for long-term success. Motivational interviewing (MI) is a behaviorally oriented approach documented to positively influence behavior change related to compliance or medication adherence, or chronic disease control, particularly, biofilm control. New evidence suggests that MI has broad utility to improve oral and general health. The aim of this paper is to introduce the dentist and specialist to the use of motivational interviewing to focus the personalized attention and motivation of each patient to improve his/her oral hygiene behaviors.
