ABSTRACT
Objective: This study assesses the behavior of proportional respiratory capacity for
speech using speech therapy and abdominal electro-stimulation.
Methods: It was carried out an explicative, experimental, longitudinal and
prospective study in a group of 26 persons with cervical spinal cord injuries. They
were divided in two groups of 13 people each. The speech therapy was applied to
the control and experimental group received electro-stimulation with speech
therapy. The groups were compared before and after the treatment. The variables
used were: forced inspiratory vital capacity, forced expiratory vital capacity and
maximum phonation time. In the control group, there was a significant
improvement in two of the measured variables; forced expiratory vital capacity and
maximum phonation time while in the experimental group the three measured
variables forced inspiratory vital capacity, forced expiratory vital capacity and
maximum phonation Time were favorably modified.
Conclusions: The electro-stimulation combined with speech therapy was favorable
for proportional respiratory capacity for speech.
