ABSTRACT
Rationale: Extent of obesity in Mexico justifies
interventions conducted jointly with schoolchildren
as well as adults responsible for their
custody|care|guidance.
Objective: To assess the impact of an educative intervention program (EIP) upon disposition of the target-subject to a change in attitude towards school-age obesity, knowledge about healthy eating, better feeding
conducts; increased physical education, and the
practice of exercise and sports, and their capacity to sustain by themselves changes incorporated at
the conclusion of the EIP.
Material and method: An EIP was administered as 2 hours each educative sessions for 4 weeks to 10 obese
schoolchildren (Boys: 80.0%) with ages between
7-11 years; and 9 parents (
Mothers: 67.0%); at a
elementary school in the city of Comala (Comala
county, State of Colima, Estados Unidos
Mexicanos). EIP combined video-presentations,
motivational interviews, roles games, interactive
workshops, and techniques for relaxation and
stress management. Impact of EIP upon enddomains
was assessed by means of ad hoc instruments.
Results: EIP caused a change of the
adult’s attitude towards school-age obesity, and
improved their knowledge on healthy eating and
promotion of physical activity. However, EIP’s
impact upon the attitude of targeted-subjects
towards embracing healthy feeding conducts and
the incorporation of physical activity was not
significant. Capacity of the subject to sustain by
themselves changes incorporated after EIP could
not be demonstrated.
Conclusions: Educative interventions might mobilize parents of the obese schoolchildren to change their attitude towards this health problem. Other interventions must be designed aimed to accompany targetedsubjects in embracing new styles of physical
activity, eating and living.
