ABSTRACT
Rationale: Oxidative stress might be aggravated
with age, and influence the course of aging.
Objective: To assess the redox status redox of
elderlies living without restrictions in the
community.
Study design: Observational, analytical.
Material and method: The presence
of products derived from oxidation of lipids and
proteins, and the activity of superoxidedismutase
and catalase enzymes were assayed in
97 elderlies with ages between 70 and 99 years,
living in the county of Playa (Havana City,
Cuba). Redox variables were distributed
according with anthropometric and biochemical
indicators of the elderly´s nutritional status.
Results: The elderly´s redox status was
independent from the nutritional status
(indistinctly determined by means of the Body
Mass Index or the Mini Nutritional Assessment score). Negative associations (albeit modest)
were observed between products of oxidation of
proteins and serum albumin, on one hand; and
between super-oxide dismutase activity and
lymphocyte count, on the other.
Conclusions: Elderly´s redox status might reflect|compound the influence of the occurrence of noncommunicable
chronic diseases that might result
in inflammation, sarcopenia, and hypoalbuminemia.
Senescence of the immune system,
and pro-oxidative damage, might also contribute
to diminished activity of the systems scavenging
for oxygen reactive species.
