ABSTRACT
Rationale: Malnutrition, recognized as acute
loss of body weight, frequently escorts the
disease caused by burns, and might promote
(and even perpetuate) local infection of burned
area, thus hindering response to treatment.
Objective: To establish the association between the occurrence of local infection of the burn and
risk of malnutrition.
Study design: Retrospective.
Material and method: Microbiological cultures and clinical data were recovered from 31 burn patients assisted at the Burn Unit, “Hermanos Ameijeiras” Hospital, Havana City (Cuba) who developed local
infection of the wound. Nutritional status was
established from change in body weight during
patient´s stay in the Service.
Results: Seventyone percent of the patients suffered acute weight loss. Sixty-four point five percent of the patients showed positive cultures.
Acinetobacter sp and
Escherichia coli were the germs more frequently isolated. Acute weight loss was strongly associated with the presence of wound infection:
Malnourished: 91.0%
vs. Non-Malnourished:
0.0% (Δ= +91.0%; p ‹ 0.05).
Conclusions: Frequency of local wound infection is elevated, and associated with acute weight loss.
