ABSTRACT
Serotoninergic syndrome occurs when serotonin levels increase within the central nervous system. It is an unfavorable
reaction resulting from the interaction between medications that increase the activity of serotoninergic
neurotransmission in the central and peripheral nervous system. This is an unpopular and sometimes deadly medical
emergency.
The syndrome's identification may be challenging and is often ignored by many physicians, since clinical
manifestations not specific. Its incidence has recently increased due to the extensive use of drugs associated to this entity.
Serotoninergic syndrome is often iatrogenic and it can only be modified if the physician is aware of its existence.
Symptoms may disappear when the causing drug is withdrawn and support treatment is started. This syndrome is
characterized by a triad involving alterations in mental state, neuromuscular and autonomic dysfunction. We present
the case of a 36 year old woman who after abdominal surgery and a series of complications developed this syndrome.
