ABSTRACT
Introduction. Development centered care (DCC) is a method used in neonatal intensive care units (NICU) for premature and/or sick children in order to favor their adequate neurologic and social development. It prevents and limits stress during NICU hospitalizations with parent's aid. To describe the degree of DCC implementation used in NICU at Hospital Civil de Guadalajara Fray Antonio Alcalde (HCFAA) in order to identify deficiencies and propose measures to guarantee high quality measures that ensure the patient's neurological development.Material y Methods. This is a transversal, observational and descriptive study. Healthcare providers from HCFAA were considered the population under study. We applied a questionnaire similar to the one used by Perapoch, et al.
Results. A total of 155 surveys were answered. 66% of healthcare providers interrupted or dimmed daylight as a measure against light, meanwhile 91% (141) did not use any method to measure sound. 54% of the population contacted assigned personal to evaluate pain and 65% applied scores for pain evaluation. Parent's entrance to NICU lasted one hour as reported by 54% of the staff. “Mother kangaroo” technique was only allowed by 52% of them.
Discussion. In evaluated neonatal intensive care units DCC implementations is still insufficient. We need strategies to correct methods and modify necessary rules to achieve a better neuronal development. This requires a multidisciplinary assessment, including parents and family to ensure the neonates a better environment and well-being.
