ABSTRACT
There is enough evidence about the association
of raised fasting glucose, dyslipidemia,
insulin action, raised blood pressure and
central obesity. This association has become
known as the metabolic syndrome; it appears
in persons with a wide genetic predisposition,
phenotype variation and it is highly conditioned
by lifestyle risk factors. The metabolic
syndrome can involve a broad range of complications,
because it is not a simple disease,
but a group of health problems caused by
combination of genetic factors and sedentary
lifestyles, with a high calorie diet, which stimulate
abdominal obesity and promote insulin
resistance development. Therefore, metabolic
syndrome and their components are associated
with a high incidence of cardiovascular
disease. The metabolic syndrome provides
the background information that health professionals
need in the clinical evaluation of
their patients. For these reasons, the aim of
this publication was to review information as
current as possible, from scientific medical
journals allocated to meet, prevent and treat
the metabolic syndrome.
