ABSTRACT
Background: T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) accounts for approximately 15% and 25% in childhood and adult cases, respectively; but several studies reported that the incidence of T-ALL differs by countries and ethnic groups.
Objective: To analyze the frequency of T-ALL diagnosis of children and adults in Bolivia.
Patients and method: A retrospective study was done including born and living patients from different cities of Bolivia. Diagnoses were conducted by morphological study of peripheral blood and bone marrow; and the immunophenotypic study was performed by flow cytometry.
Results: There were studied 872 cases, 618 pediatric (71%) and 254 adults (29%) from different health centers of Bolivia. The general distribution of B-ALL was 94.5% and T-ALL 5.5% of all cases. In pediatric cases, B-lineage leukemias were 94% (581 cases), while T-ALL accounted for 6% (37 cases). In adult cases, it was observed that 96% (243 cases) were B-lineage, and T-ALL type represented only 4% (11 cases). Likewise, differences among Bolivian regions were reflected: lowland region 7%, valley 6% and plateau 2%.
Conclusions: In Bolivia, T-ALL represents 5.5% of ALL cases, which is similar to the Japanese population (4 to 10%) but lower compared to those reported in other populations.
