ABSTRACT
Introduction: Physicians do not recommend their patients to stop smoking probably because they do not know about pharmacological therapies for quitting. This study was performed to determine this possibility.
Material and methods: A questionnaire with 16 questions was given to 69 general physicians (GP), 102 pulmonologists and 49 cardiologists.
Results: The interview included 141 men and 79 women (mean age of 36±10 years) among which 17.7% were smokers. Less than 20% of the physicians answered correctly to the questions and only two of these were answered correctly by most of the physicians (97.7% and 77.7%). No differences in terms of nicotinism among physicians or between the percentage of correct answers and smoking habit of physicians were found.
Conclusions: Physicians, regardless their specialty, have poor knowledge about the different pharmacological treatments to quit smoking; thus, a specific educational program is required for them.
