Effect induced by calcium elimination on the capacitated human sperm mobility

ABSTRACT
Objective: To assess the effect induced by calcium elimination on human sperm mobility.
Material and method: A prospective study was done with samples of semen obtained from 12 normosperm patients with 3-6 days of sexual abstinence, obtained at Specialized Center in Sterility and Human Reproduction, Hospital Angeles, Mexico City. The effect of elimination calcium was done with tetraacetic acid of etilenglicol, a Ca
2+ chelant. For observing the effect on mobility of human sperm several tests were done; external calcium was reduced from 2.5 to 68 nM with the addition of 3mM of EGTA.
Results: It was observed a slow reduction in the percentage of mobile sperm that almost reached 0, but it was reversible; recovery was better in not-capacitated sperm than in capacitated ones. The effect of removal of Ca
2+ of media on mobility of sperm was better in not-capacitated sperm than in capacitated ones.
Conclusions: Calcium is important to activate and maintain capacitated sperm mobility and its absence has higher effect on progressive mobility, main parameter to consider in sperm capacitation and is essential for sperm reach ovocyte and fecundation takes place.
