ABSTRACT
Introduction: Pleural effusion in one of the most common manifestations of tuberculosis and can present as an acute disease.
Methods: The clinical, radiological and bacteriological characteristics of inpatients admitted at the National Institute of Respiratory Diseases from January 1989 to December 1993 with the diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis were analyzed. Patients with pleural tuberculosis were divided into two groups, male (TPH group) and female (TPM group).
Results: We included 107 patients with diagnosis of pleural tuberculosis. Mean age was 43.66±18.7 years for the whole group, most patients were in the fourth and fifth decades of life. The most frequent symptom was cough in 95 patients (89.7%), the right side was affected in 55 (51.4%), and was bilateral in only one patient.
Separation in two groups, showed weight loss as the most frequent characteristic, in the TPH group in 58.9% whereas in the TPM group in 82.35% (p=0.02) and positive PPD was more frequently observed in the THP group, 29.16%, than in the TPM group (17.6, p.0.02= Fisher).
Smears were positive more frequently in patients who presented lung lesion (40%), (p=0.02).
Discussion and conclusions: With the obtained data we can conclude that there are very few differences between male and female patients with pleural tuberculous effusion. However, is important to emphasize that male patients can show greater physical deterioration that is reflected in weight loss. However, this was not properly quantified.
According to our study, the possible effect of gender in pleuropulmonary tuberculosis should be analyzed further.
